MYSTERY AT
THE CLUB SANDWICH
Doug Cushman
Clarion Books
2004
Available: Hardcopy
& Kindle
Nick Trunk is a detective who
works for peanuts because he's an elephant. One day Maggie Trouble shows up. She's the assistant to foxy cabaret singer
Lola Gale and has come to hire Nick to find Lola's missing lucky marbles. Nick takes
the case, investigates and starts gathering clues. I won't tell you the whole
story, but he does find the marbles, solve the mystery, and fingers the thief.
This
was a very fun picture book written for all ages. The artwork is wonderful. Young
kids will enjoy the silliness of an elephant working for peanuts and a singer
who's lost her marbles. Older kids will enjoy the mystery and following the
clues. Grown-up types will smile as the author spins a tale worthy of Dashiell
Hammett.
TARGET AUDIENCE: 3-6 grades
MYSTERY SUSPENCE: predicable, but fun
KID APPEAL: all ages
