Middle school is turning out to be the pits for Elise.
She doesn't really fit in. She can't seem to get her work in on time. On top of
this, she's been assigned to share a locker with a popular mean girl. Worse,
her longtime best friend embarrasses her because he seems like he's still in
grade school. She lives with her aunt and uncle because her parents died when
she was too young too remember them. That doesn't bother her, because it's home
and they love her. But then another aunt with a baby moves in, and everything
changes at home, too. Elise receives a mysterious key left for her by her
father. The key unlocks one of the eight doors upstairs in the barn behind the
house.
The eight keys in the story each open a new door,
each one revealing something new to Elise about herself and her family. This is
not a traditional mystery for the reader, but it is one for Elise as she comes
of age and learns to navigate middle school. It is a sweet story that girls
would enjoy.
