2008
Available:
Paperback, Kindle
Lily Mathis is in the sixth grade and
lives in the small town of Olena in the middle of nowhere. That doesn’t bother
her. It’s the only life she’s known. Besides, she’s not your typical kid. She’s
haunted by her past. Most people don’t even notice her much, which allows her
to observe and spy on the town folk. Her one secret passion is to read Nancy
Drew books. She’s read the ones in the library at least fourteen times, which
would surprise everyone. They don’t even know she can read. Or talk. She hasn’t
spoken for three years. Not since it happened. Her brother’s death. When Tinny
Bridges comes to town everything changes. She catches Lily reading. Then new
girl steals from the store and blames Lily. Lily doesn’t like or trust Tinny,
but when a strange man shows up in town and Tinny goes missing, it’s up to Lily
to solve the mystery and find her.
This is a well written, coming of age novel for
a younger child than usual. It’s set in the past and told from Lily’s
viewpoint. Her present life is layered with her memories to create two storylines
that run parallel in the telling. It’s a compelling read that takes a look at
secrets, forgiveness, and relationships.
Target audience: Grades 5 - 8

Kid appeal: advanced readers
