Colette Iselin is on the school fieldtrip of all school fieldtrips__
a week in Paris with her French class. It sounds fabulous, but on the
ride to their hotel, their bus is rerouted due to a gruesome murder scene.
There's a serial killer on the loose in Paris, not that this should affect
Colette. The killer's targets are members of the beautiful set of Parisian
high
society. She's lucky to barely fit in with her popular friends, which is why
she doesn't tell them when she starts seeing a strange vision of a woman from
the past. A woman that looks a lot like the young queen Marie Antoinette who
was beheaded during the French Revolution. The ghostly queen keeps appearing
and Colette needs to know why. As she begins to investigate, she discovers
clues that link her family's past to the long dead queen. And that Colette
herself may be the key to stop the killings.
This was a compelling read
from start to finish. Colette has a strong voice and you can't help wanting to
help her see the truth about herself and her relationships. There's a nice mix
of history, romance and mystery woven into this coming of age novel. Girls
especially will enjoy this book.
Target audience: Grades 7-10
Mystery / suspense: compelling
Kid appeal: high
