BOOK REVIEW: THE LEGEND OF DIAMOND LIL

THE LEGEND OF DIAMOND LIL
Doreen Cronin
Scholastic
2012

Available: paperback, hardcover, Kindle

J.J. is on the job. He's a retired search-and-rescue dog who's moonlighting as a guard dog for Moosh and her chicks while they sleep in the chicken coop. It seems like J.J. has everything under control until a new problem pops up. A new dog has moved in next door and something doesn't seem quite right about Diamond Lil. She's a little too good to be
true. And in his opinion, the chicks are spending too much time with her. Plus there's a possum on the loose that keeps trying to sneak into the coop.
This was a fun book. It is full of mystery, adventure, humor and talking animals. It should appeal to a wide variety of young readers. What's really nice, is that when J.J. solves the mystery in the end, there is even a great surprise wrapped into it that should catch the reader by surprise.

Target audience: Grades 4-5
Mystery / Suspense: Good
Kid appeal: Fun read
