BOOK REVIEW: TERROR AT THE ZOO

TERROR AT THE ZOO

Cobblehill Books
1992

Available: paperback, library binding & Kindle

Twelve-year-old Ellen Streater is excited because she gets to camp out at the Woodland Park Zoo. Her grandparents bought the "gift" at an auction to benefit the zoo and have re-gifted it to Ellen for her birthday. It would be a better present if she didn't have to take her little brother Corey along. Still, it promises to be fun. Her parents will be there to deal with him. But for some reason Mom and Dad don't show up. Neither Ellen nor her brother tell the zoo officials and risk having the night cancelled.  Besides, no parents mean no bedtime and no rules. What could go wrong?
An escaped convict locked in the zoo with them, is what. And he's stalking them. Ellen will have to use every ounce of cunning to save herself and her brother.
This was an exciting read. Ellen relies on what she learned in her school science project about animal communication to outsmart the convict. It's fast paced. Has lots of suspense. Will appeal to animal lovers.

Target audience: Grades 5-6
Mystery / suspense: high
Kid appeal: good
