NATHAN HALE
1755 - 1776
Spied For: The Continental Army
Nathan Hale was a teacher until
the Revolutionary war in 1775. He joined a Connecticut militia. During the
Battle of Long Island, Hale volunteered to go behind enemy lines to monitor the
movements of the British and became America's first spy. He disguised himself
as a Dutch teacher and made his way to New York. He was captured in a tavern
and was
tricked into betraying himself as a patriot.
He was found guilty of being an
illegal combatant and sentenced to death.
Hale is best remembered
for his speech before his hanging, “I only regret that I have but one life to
lose for my country." He was 21 years old.
