When Anna Mae Shetler
and her two best friends, Jeremiah and Amos, find a hidden tree house in the
woods, they also uncover a hidden box with money and an old diary. Not sure of
what to do with their discovery they agree to leave everything where they found
it until they can figure out the rightful owner. Anna Mae secretly takes the
diary home. It's her grandmother's from when she was a girl and is full of
secrets that impact the present. She becomes engrossed in the past and almost
misses that Jeremiah and Amos both have difficult problems of their own to sort
out. When the money disappears, it threatens to destroy their friendship forever.
Because the story is set in an Amish
community, the story, characters and tone feel from a totally different time
period. Young readers should find the Amish way of life fascinating even though
the mysterious elements might feel a little old fashioned and predictable.
