Sixteen-year-old Jacob has always been close to his grandfather. Of
course now that he's older he realizes his grandpapa is a little odd and given
to paranoid delusions. That is until he finds his grandfather dead and sees
something that can't easily be explained. Next he's given a box of his
grandfather's things, full of the strangest old photographs. Maybe his
grandfather wasn't crazy and his stories true . . . unless the photographs were
faked. Jacob doesn't know what to believe. His parents are
concerned and send him to a psychiatrist. As part of his therapy he and his father travel to Wales where his grandfather was sent to live in a children's home during World War II. While his father goes bird watching, Jacob explores the ruins of the old school. He finds more old photographs in the ruins and more questions about his grandfather's mysterious past. He discovers a girl spying on him and chases after her because he just knows she has the answers. When he catches her, the truth is unbelievable.

This was a very compelling read. The reader is taken on a fantastical
trip into the past along with Jacob. The story is peppered with old photographs
that illustrate the story. And like Jacob, the reader will won't know what is
true or imagined until the end.
Target audience: grades 6-9
Mystery/suspense: good
